I’m not just talking about the Canadians filling up at gas stations in Bellingham, or the ones stocking up on Coach at the Premium outlets in Tullalip. There are more Canadians in Seattle and if you want to find them, they hang out at Castle Ice in Renton. Maple Leafs, Canadiens, Oilers and Canucks exist together in harmony! We took the boys for their first “Intro to Hockey” class today (they hold them the first Sunday of EVERY month!) and couldn’t believe the provincial representation we saw. The boys are definitely not hockey players yet. I think they might have kissed the ice for good luck a few times during our session, but they still want to go back for more.
The country confusion was so blurry that one boy asked for White Spot when we left. What does one eat after you play hockey in the United States? I think we’re going to start learning some really cool new hockey traditions down here. I’m not sure if I’m ready to be a hockey mom yet, but I was thankful that the other moms I met seemed so cheerful and warm.
PS. if you are the type of Canadian looking for deals south of the border and you have kids in tow, I’d beg you to please continue past the outlets and head to Seattle Center. You can eat at the new Armory food court, ride the monorail downtown and shop your heart out at Nordstrom Rack and all the other lovely stores nearby-there are plenty of deals here to be found-and you’ll get a little slice of the Seattle experience tucked into your bags to dream about on your drive home.
